During Runosong Day which was celebrated in tuesday April 25th in various locations and concerts in Finland one of the main concerts was held in Hietajärvi village. The Chairman of the Board of Juminkeko Foundation Markku Nieminen said that event held in Hietajärvi was one of the greatest way to celebrate Finlands 100 year anniversary.

Performing at the Hietajärvi concert were Taito Hoffrén and master folk musician Jussi Huovinen who was also presented with a representative art. Jussi Huovinen turned 93 years old on April 2nd, 2017. Art was presented to Jussi by Markku Nieminen the Juminkeko Foundation Chairman of the Board and Nunna Raatikainen who made the art. Art will final place at Jussis house in Hietajärvi. Jussi has stayed away from house past winter put waits to be back when summer comes.

Pauliina Syrjälä Sommeloon / Pauliina Syrjälä to perform at Sommelo 2017

Sommelo Ethno Music Festival will be held June 28th till July 2nd in Kainuu and Viena Karelia. Opening concert will take place in Hossa National park on wednesday June 28th at 3 p.m. Performing at the concert will be MeNaiset group. There will be public transportation to concert venue from Suomussalmi and Kuhmo.

One of the themes of 2017 festival is Kantele and in addition of MeNaiset group list of names performing at the festival in 2017 will be Pauliina Syrjälä who will bring his degree concert titled as "Pohjolan Pauhu" to the festival. Concert will premiere in Helsinki area during spring. 

Another kantele player performing at the festival will be Maija Kauhanen whose performance "Raivopyörä". Concert takes place on wednesday June 28th at 6 p.m. in Hotel Kalevala.

Kantele seminar will take place in Kuhmo Arts Centre on thursday June 29th at 12 at noon. Seminar will be held in co-operation with Kantele Association which celebrates it 40th anniversary.
 
Club evenings held in Kaesa home bakery cafe will also be returning in 2017.

Sommelo 2011



Kesän 2011 Sommelossa soivat ja kuuluivat paimensoittimet, saamelainen musiikkikulttuuri sekä suuret laulut. Erikoisteemana tapahtumassa oli sauna ja niinpä Kuhmo-talon taakse rantaa ilmestyi festiivalin ajaksi kaksi Sommelo saunaa, Vienan musta kyly ja modernimpi näköalasauna keinulauteella. Vieraita kesän Sommeloon saapui kaikista saamelaiskulttuurin ilmansuunnista: Suomesta, Ruotsista, Norjasta ja Venäjältä. Mukana festivaalissa oli mm. suomalaista folkräppiä esittänyt kokoonpano Jätkäjätkät.

Main themes for Sommelo 2011 were sepherders' instruments, Sami music culture and great songs, as special theme festival audience had change to experience sauna. Two different kind of saunas were brought just a back yard of Kuhmo Art Centre and festival visitors had a change to reserve their own sauna turns.

Sommelo festival got visitors  from all the cardinal points of the Sami culture: from Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia. For example Finnish folkrap group called Jätkäjätkät were performing at the festival.

On tuesday April 25th in total of 21 events will take place in 17 different places around Finland under Runosong Day. Best of the Finlands folk musicians will be perfroming in concerts during the day. 

Also on very same day in Kuhmo at 6 p.m. the 15th Arhippa Perttunen Symposium will take place. Symposium takes place annually every year and date (April 25th) goes back the day when Elias Lönnrot and Arhippa Perttunen met in the village of Latvajärvi in Viena Karelia.

Performing in symposium will be Doctor of Philosophy who will keep presentation about subject titled New Age of Old Myths. After presentation Taito Hoffrén will perform in a concert.

Sommelo 2017 avajaiskonsertti Hossassa / Sommelo 2017 opening concert at Hossa National Park

Sommelo opening concert will be held at Hossa National Park on Wednesday June 28th, 2017. Public transportation from Kuhmo and Suomussalmi to concert venue will be arranged. Concert will be part of Finland 100 year cebration as well as part of Kuulkaa korpeimme kuiskintaa program. Kuulkaa korpeimme kuiskintaa program is produced in co-operation by Sommelo Ethno Music Festival, Kajaani Poetry Week and Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival.

Kantele seminar will be held on Thursday June 29th, 2017 as part of Kantele Association 40 year celebration and on the very same evening the main concert Pohjolan Pauhu featuring Pauliina Syrjälä and seven other kantele players. Summer 2017 Sommelo program also includes cabaret and much more.

For childrens Sommelo program features concert titled Magic Violin.

Viena Karelia part of Sommelo will take place on July 1st and July 2nd, 2017 in village of Vuokkiniemi. Vuokkiniemi was chosen Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2017. Viena Karelian program will include performances from finnish and viena karelian groups. 

Tourist trip from Finland to Viena Karelian part of Sommelo will be arranged and details about this will be published on Sommelo homepage as soon as it will be available.

Courses include both old and familiar like Näppäri course, Runo song course, International Kantele camp as well as some new courses like work shop with MeNaiset group. Course students will have free admission to concerts.
